What is ISPM-15?

International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM-15) is a global regulation that requires wood packaging materials to be treated to prevent the spread of invasive pests and diseases across international borders.

Non-compliant wood packaging can be rejected at ports, quarantined, or destroyed - potentially delaying your shipment and incurring significant costs.

Why Heat Treatment is Required

Understanding the importance of ISPM-15 compliance for international trade

Pest Prevention

Heat treatment kills wood-boring insects, larvae, and other pests that could devastate foreign ecosystems

Disease Control

Eliminates pathogens and fungi that could spread plant diseases to agricultural areas

Customs Clearance

Proper HT stamps ensure smooth passage through customs without delays or inspections

Not Sure About Your Destination?

When in doubt, use heat treated pallets. Over 180 countries now require ISPM-15 compliance, and the list grows every year. It's safer and often more cost-effective to always use HT pallets for international shipments.

Understanding the IPPC Mark

The official stamp that proves your pallets meet international standards

🌲
US-XXXXX
HT

Official IPPC/ISPM-15 Mark

Every properly heat treated pallet carries this standardized mark. Customs officials worldwide are trained to recognize and verify this stamp.

IPPC Symbol

The wheat/grain logo indicates the pallet complies with International Plant Protection Convention standards.

Country Code (US)

Two-letter ISO country code where the treatment was performed. Our pallets are marked "US" for United States.

Producer Number (XXXXX)

Unique identifier assigned to our facility by APHIS. This allows traceability back to our treatment facility.

Treatment Code (HT)

"HT" indicates Heat Treatment. Other codes include "MB" for Methyl Bromide (being phased out) and "DH" for Dielectric Heating.

Heat Treatment FAQ

Common questions about ISPM-15 and heat treated pallets

How long does heat treatment last?

Heat treatment is permanent - the pallet doesn't "expire." However, if a pallet is repaired using non-treated wood, it would need to be re-treated to remain compliant. The HT stamp remains valid as long as the pallet hasn't been repaired with untreated wood.

Can you heat treat pallets I already own?

Yes! Bring your pallets to our facility and we'll heat treat them for $3/pallet. We can usually complete treatment same-day for quantities under 100 pallets. Larger quantities may require overnight processing.

What's the difference between HT and MB (Methyl Bromide)?

Both meet ISPM-15 requirements. Heat treatment (HT) uses temperature to kill pests, while Methyl Bromide (MB) is a chemical fumigant. MB is being phased out worldwide due to environmental concerns. We only use heat treatment, which is the preferred method.

Do I need heat treated pallets for shipping to Canada or Mexico?

Yes. Despite being NAFTA/USMCA partners, both Canada and Mexico require ISPM-15 compliant wood packaging for all imports. Non-compliant shipments can be rejected at the border.

Can plastic or metal pallets be used instead of heat treated wood?

Yes, plastic and metal pallets are exempt from ISPM-15 requirements since they can't harbor pests. However, they're significantly more expensive. For most applications, heat treated wood pallets offer the best value.

What documentation do I receive with heat treated pallets?

Each order includes a treatment certificate with our facility ID, treatment date, quantity, and batch number. The pallets themselves carry the official IPPC stamp. We can provide additional documentation for customs upon request.

What happens if I ship internationally with non-compliant pallets?

Consequences can include: shipment held at port, mandatory fumigation (costly), cargo rejection and return shipping, fines and penalties, or destruction of the pallets and potentially your goods. It's never worth the risk.
