Standard European size, common in UK. Equivalent to 48" x 40".
Most common European pallet size. ISO standard for European logistics.
ISO standard pallet for international shipping. Common in Asia-Pacific.
Standard Australian pallet size. Square design for optimal container fit.
Understanding Pallet Dimensions
Everything you need to know about pallet measurements
Length x Width
Pallet sizes are expressed as length x width in inches (US) or millimeters (metric). The first number is typically the stringer length, and the second is the deck board length.
Example: 48" x 40" means the pallet is 48 inches in one direction and 40 inches in the other.
Height
Standard pallet height is typically 6 inches (150mm) for stringer pallets. Block pallets may be slightly taller at around 6.5 inches due to the block design.
Standard: 6" for stringers
Block: 6-6.5"
Low-profile: 4.5-5"
Weight Capacity
Load capacity varies by pallet construction, wood type, and condition. Capacity ratings are for evenly distributed static loads.
Static: Pallet at rest on floor
Dynamic: Moving on forklift (60-75%)
Racking: On racking beams (50-65%)
Pallet Entry Types
The number of entry points affects how the pallet can be handled
2-Way Entry
Entry from 2 sides only
- Fork entry from two opposite sides
- Typically stringer pallets
- Good for single-direction warehousing
- More economical option
4-Way Entry
- Fork entry from all four sides
- Block pallets or notched stringers
- Maximum flexibility for handling
- Ideal for tight spaces and racking
Choosing the Right Size
Consider these factors when selecting your pallet size
What are you shipping?
Product dimensions, weight, and fragility affect ideal pallet size. Products should fit within the pallet footprint without overhang for safe handling.
Tips:
- Measure your products carefully
- Account for packaging
- Consider stacking requirements
Where is it going?
Domestic shipping typically uses 48" x 40" pallets. Export may require specific sizes or ISPM-15 heat treatment for international compliance.
Tips:
- Check destination requirements
- Consider customs regulations
- Verify container compatibility
How will it be stored?
Racking systems often dictate size requirements. Standard rack beams are spaced for specific pallet sizes. Floor storage has more flexibility.
Tips:
- Check your rack specifications
- Consider aisle width
- Plan for inventory rotation
What transportation method?
Standard 53-foot trailers fit 48" x 40" pallets efficiently. Container shipping may benefit from different sizes for optimal cube utilization.
Tips:
- Calculate truck cube utilization
- Consider weight limits
- Plan for efficient loading
